Spring is right around the corner, the time to enjoy longer days, warmer weather and new beginnings. It’s also the perfect time to clean away those winter cobwebs and give your kitchen some attention; to bring it back into all its glory so it is well-prepared for the spring and summer months ahead!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here are ten easy ways to give your kitchen the perfect spring clean.
1. Declutter the surfaces
We’re all guilty of scattering our kitchen surfaces with appliances, pots, pans and much more. But now is the perfect time to go through everything and give it a new home. Take advantage of any spare cupboard space and put away appliances you don’t use often. Give the surfaces a scrub to make sure they’re sparkling for the new season!
2. Clear out the cupboards
It can seem a daunting task, but also an incredibly satisfying one – and you’ll feel so much better once it’s done and dusted! Get right to the back, pulling out bits and pieces you may have forgotten about, and check the use-by dates on your jars and packets. If there is anything still within its use-by date that you aren’t planning to use, consider donating it to your local food bank rather than just tossing it out. Give the cupboards a wipe inside to remove any spills or musty smells, and you’re set to re-organise to your heart’s desire!
3. Clean out the fridge
Probably one of the least desirable jobs, but one that needs to be done. Go through the food in your fridge, getting rid of anything out of date, and give the shelves a good clean. Make sure to give the front and handles a wipe down to remove any lingering dirt or grime. You’d be surprised at the difference a glistening clean fridge makes to a kitchen!
4. Don’t underestimate the power of lemons and bicarbonate of soda
Stubborn stains or smells? Nothing some lemon and bicarbonate of soda can’t solve! Lemons are a natural antibacterial, so they’re great to rub over things like chopping boards for a deep clean, and they can help remove lingering scents too. Bicarbonate of soda is alkaline, and is great at cutting through grease and grime to make surfaces, sinks and much more squeaky clean. It also doesn’t scratch, so it can be used on the majority of surfaces. From wiping down surfaces to unblocking your sink, no kitchen is complete without it!
5. Tackle the oven
Be honest, when was the last time you cleaned your oven? For many of us, it’s not a job we tackle often, but better to scrub now than when you could be enjoying the beautiful sunshine outdoors. Oven cleaner does the job in most cases, but if you’re dealing with some particularly stubborn spots, this method can make things easier for you:
- Mix equal parts salt and bicarbonate of soda with some vinegar to make a paste
- Add a squirt of lemon juice
- Spread on the oven and scrub to remove dirt
6. Give your appliances some TLC
In most houses, appliances like the kettle, microwave and toaster are used every day, but we sometimes forget to give them the care they need. Taking some time to give them some love can do wonders to make a kitchen feel refreshed for spring. Start by descaling the kettle using white vinegar and water, and empty your toaster of those pesky crumbs. An easy way to clean your microwave is to place a microwave-safe bowl of water with a chopped lemon or several tablespoons of vinegar inside. Turn the microwave on high for several minutes or until the water boils, leave it to cool for 15 minutes, then use a sponge or damp cloth to wipe the inside and outside.
7. Wash the windows
They may not look dirty, but giving your windows a clean with some glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth can make a kitchen really sparkle! Use a squeegee or dry microfibre cloth to dry the windows top to bottom, using a circular motion on any stubborn streaks. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.
8. Don’t forget the floors
The final thing to clean in your kitchen is the floors. Give them a good sweep or hoover to remove most of the dust and debris, before giving them a mop with some hot soapy water. Seeing them gleam afterwards will make the whole process feel worthwhile!
9. Introduce some fresh flowers or greenery
Incorporating some beautiful flowers and greenery into your kitchen is a great idea to create the perfect finishing touch, to celebrate a job well done and add some extra sparkle for spring. Fresh flowers can help elevate your mood, add a pop of colour and can make you feel more in touch with nature. Houseplants can also help to lower stress levels, increase productivity and keep the air cleaner.
10. Give your kitchen a new look
Nothing makes your kitchen feel as good as new like giving it a brand new look, and you don’t even have to break the bank to do it! A simple lick of paint can do wonders to refresh the room, and you could even have fun picking out a new colour! You could also consider replacing the knobs and handles on your cupboards. Whether you go for a bold modern look, or stick with a classy traditional one, there are so many designs to give your kitchen a wonderful new look!
After all that decluttering, scrubbing and painting, your kitchen should feel refreshed and ready to face the spring and summer months. The only thing left to do is stick the kettle on, pop your feet up and enjoy it.
